Better, but worse

Verschlimmbessern is a portmanteau that blends the German words “verschlimmern” (to make worse) and “verbessern” (to improve). The result? A single word that perfectly captures the act of making something worse, while trying to make it better.

As far as I know, there is no one English word that captures the meaning of this as well as that German expression. We might say the cure (or remedy) is worse than the disease, speak of backfiring improvements or unintended consequences. All useful, but none are as succinct as verschlimmbessern.

There is an entertaining irony to it. Someone (perhaps you!) set out to make something better, but instead made it worse. That’s not what it was supposed to be – worse is the opposite of better!

Think of an eagerly anticipated software update that removes a much-needed feature. A diet that somehow leads to weight gain. A new workout routine that leaves you injured and exhausted instead of energized.

It is also often inevitable. When making well-intended changes, things often do worsen, before they become better. Progress often does not move in a straight line. As we learn and try new approaches, we necessarily experience setbacks along the way. If we are being earnest about the improvements, then the key is of course not to stop at the wrong time.

Framing is important and the right words can play a critical role in articulating that framing. Using the word verschlimmbessern, when describing a situation does more than just describe or express annoyance.

It is playful, though pointed. The word almost sounds like a joke, even though it describes something serious. It softens the criticism, while making it clear that things aren’t quite right. It is an assertion that is both honest and constructive, hopefully inviting reflection and searching for deeper understanding.

Especially in complex systems, improvements are rarely easy or straightforward. Unintended consequences are all around us.

Verschlimmbessern captures that reality perfectly.

It is a funny and unusual word.

It is worth taking seriously.
