About Too

The word too intensifies. As an adverb, it describes something of excessive degree, as to be regrettable; as more than is needed or wanted; more than is suitable or enough; and as beyond what is desirable, fitting, or right.

Used in this way, the word points to limits. As such, this three-letter word does important work. Let’s take a look.


By itself, too suggests a limit, but only when paired with an attribute, does it make clearer the type of limit.

Too what?

We speak of too little, too late and of course too much and too soon. They are two sides of the same coin. Something can be too easy or too hard. A vacation may be too short or too long.

Any such statement will be descriptive, but its accuracy (and our ability to understand it in depth) depends entirely on the context to which it is applied.

Where

Context is important and relevant. Something occurring here may be way too much. That same thing over there might not be nearly enough. And of course, it is easy to become overly focused on a specific attribute, missing other aspects of the picture.

In some environments, there is so much perceived urgency, you quickly get the impression that nothing ever happens fast enough. If speed is the only thing you are optimizing for, then it surely comes at the expense of other attributes, such as reflection, quality, and the like. Speed is important, but if you are only worried about things moving too slow, then you are missing the other side of it, because it is possible to go too fast as well.

Likewise, friction (such as in process or software) is at times seen as something inherently bad, resulting in a focus on things being too hard. I do value and appreciate simplicity, but thoughtful design often cares about making it very easy to do the right thing, while also making it very hard to do the wrong thing. That is what effective friction management is all about. Things can be too difficult, but they can clearly also be too easy.

Real-world contexts are multi-dimensional, reflecting multiple different attributes. Speed, weight, color, quality, complexity — the appropriate characteristics vary, but they all have associated ranges and limits. They complement and balance each other within the given context.

Why

All of this matters, necessarily, because of their consequences. If something is too much, it is too much inherently because of some effect it brings about.

Undertraining increases your risk of injury and so does overtraining. Being too slow can mean falling behind your competitors, being too fast can mean being too early, perhaps risking failure because the environment is not ready.


The right conditions exist in between too much and too little. The limits you examine show you the shape of what is appropriate in your context. They also show you how much room there is between them, telling you something about the degree of precision that is required to get it right.

Be mindful of the attributes you examine – and remember to consider their opposites, where that makes sense.

Too doesn’t just point to existing limits. When paired with the right attributes, it helps you explore the edges of a situation to understand and navigate it better.
